My thinking is, once you've updated the signature file in AdAware there's 
no need to have a connection to the Internet to run the scan, so don't. 
Reboot in Safe Mode without the Networking and let it scan away.

Yes, I'm on XP.  And I need to clarify something in the post you responded
to.  I *do* have internet access in safe mode.  Originally, I must have
failed to select the "Safe Mode with Networking" option on boot-up.
