Remote Desktop puts you ON your home PC, so that your laptop becomes like a terminal, but all your key and mouse actions take place on the PC. But this requires XP (probably Pro) on the home PC. And your laptop needs the client - included with XP (again, probably Pro). But you can get the clients from MS for free.

Remote Desktop client will run on just about any 32bit windows. Additionally, there are remote desktop clients for *nix available (http://rdesktop.sourceforge.net/).
