I took the plunge this past weekend and purchased a Plextor video capture
device. It uses WinDVD for the capture. It works fine except the preview
window goes blank when I capture and convert to MPEG4/DVX format. The FAQ on
their support page says this is a known problem with Win2k and I need to
install the media player 6.4 codec. It even has a link to download the files.
Here's where it gets bad.

I installed (I thought) the codec and nothing changed. The documentation is
very adamant about having the latest patches to Windows so I loaded the most
recent updates including an update to media player 9. Still no change. Last
night I tried again to load the 6.4 codec. Interesting thing. The install
would appear to finish but if I ran it again it would try to install the same
files and I would get a message that a previous install didn't finish properly.
I went through this cycle many times.

Somewhere during this I thought maybe the install file I was using was bad and
went to Microsoft site to get it. Noticed there is a different download file
for media player 7 and above. Thinking I had at last found the source of my
problems I downloaded and installed this codec. Still no joy. Again, tried
multiple times.

I have sent another message to their technical support by am expecting to be
told it's not their problem since it involves a Microsoft codec install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rick
