Something I do here at work (believe it or not, not file server...) is order
a 2nd hard drive with every PC we get. And all "data" is stored on that hard
drive. Windows gets corrupted on C: and that drive gets hosed, still have
their data. It's a "stop gap" procedure until we can get the OK ($) for a
filer server...

Last year I had a similar problem. I bought a new hard drive and added it
to the machine and installed XP on the new drive. The files on the old
drive then became accessible, and I lost nothing but gained a lot of new
empty disk space.

New hard drives are under a $100 now, so it is cheaper than a couple of
hours of repair time in the shop.
