I haven't seen the CPU% problem with UltraVNC but have read some comments on their mailing list.

Two contributers are not running their mirror video driver and that certain video cards cause it. The mirror driver really speeds up the remote refresh.

Also, if you aren't using VPN you can use the DSM plug in and you will still have an encrypted connection.
