Thanks Bill.  I suspect that I got myself into design mode by adding the
new button.  At that point I was able to delete the previous buttons.  I'm
no Excel expert.  I've done a fair amount of work in Access with buttons
and macros but nothing obvious jumped out at me in Excel.  Everything I
know in Excel I've learned because people ask me questions on how to fix
their problems.  Today I learned something new.  Thanks.

Dave,

I know you found a workaround for this, but the "correct" method is to
display the Controls Toolbar and then select the Design Mode button to
enter design mode.
