A good podcast to listen to about these topics is Security Now! (
http://grc.com/securitynow.htm) with Steve Gibson and Leo Laport. 

Steve recommends a router (IPCop accomplishes this) and for outbound 
protection a software firewall. Steve recommends Kerio and Tiny. (

I am not saying the Steve is the authoritive figure on security, but his 
suggestions should be considered at least.
