Jeff,

I had a problem very similar to this with a Windows ME system once. The PC
could never see any other PC's on the network, although I was able to find
them by doing a search.

What someone told me to do back then, and which I did, was to go into the
network properties on the Ethernet card interface (under network
connections) and then uninstall the TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Networks
items. Then reboot your PC and, if I remember correctly, the next time you
go into network properties, you will be prompted to reinstall those
protocols. I don't THINK I had to have my Windows CD when I did it, as I
think it found the required files under the /cabs/ directory on the HD, but
it's possible you might need the Windows CD in the drive to do the
reinstall.

In any event, that worked for me. After that I was able to see everything on
my network.

Subject: [PCTECH] Home network problem

Regarding the home network problem I posted about last week (where my Dell
XP Pro can't see and/or share with others):

I made some headway. I removed Zone Alarm and did a repair of Win XP from
the CD.

Other PCs still don't see the Dell and the Dell doesn't see any other PCs
when I fully expand My Network Places.

*BUT*, if I do a 'search for computers' then the Dell can find each of the
others individually, and each of the others can find the Dell. I have also
successfully installed the Dell's printer onto the other PCs and printed.

I can't set up WINS because I don't have a server operating system. Is this
as far as I can go? I still think that when I expand My Network Places, the
Dell should see and be seen. Am I right?

Thanks.
