I wouldn't trust schools.
I don't think any school is handing out donated pc's. They are purchased.
The IBM Thinkpads at NC State are just a select config provided by
the school, and purchased in qty. They are sold thru the campus bookstore
operated by the University. During fall "move-in" week, the Engineering School provides Computer Science students to answer questions, and even help install and connect within the dorms. I found more intelligent info from them than in any
computer store I've ever been in.

I wouldn't trust schools. My dad peddled encyclopedia's many years ago.
Back then you gave a school a free set of encyclopedia's and they were
more than happy to give you a name and address listing of the students.

Re: [PCTECH] Laptop choice

Thanks for the input, guys! As for the preloaded software, I'm not
really worried about it in this instance. It is provided by the school
and is used to setup the machine for use with their network and contains
software I would need specifically for my program.

I'm going to keep my eyes open for awhile, but as of now, I can't find any

other compareable laptops at a better price than the two given through the

school. And I'm still leaning toward the Thinkpad. I'll decide once I
see them both in person if I can.

Thanks!

Mike

Yeah, I'd be cautious on the preloaded software. I've heard that PC's
at
some discount houses often come with a LOAD of extra software on them to

get you to try and buy.

Now, if you ever plan to go into WDSC with that PC, I've heard that disk

RPM can make a HUGE difference in the laptop arena. You sacrifice
battery
for RPM perhaps. I ?think? the number I heard was 7400rpm is what is
desired.
