Thanks Dan for the suggestions. Hopefully, M$ might get around to fixing
theirs/w. I agree there was seemed to be no problems with the version before
Defender.

Many thanks
Robin

Not sure how much help this will be, other than to save you from pulling
out
your hair.

For a lot of people, myself included, Microsoft "broke" Windows Defender
with the symptoms you described. Too bad, because it seems to be a pretty
good product otherwise. I never had problems with the version M$ had
before
they renamed it to Defender, but I think I got Defender to update a few
times before it "broke".  I gave up after a week of checking for a fix;
that
was several weeks ago, so I am somewhat surprised to hear that they still
haven't fixed it.

FWIW, there are a lot of other products that do what Defender was supposed
to do, some good ones even do it for free. I have had good experience
with
"Spybot - Search & Destroy" and "Ad-Aware".

HTH,
Dan
