This raises a question. Thunderbird shows the message in the preview
pane but only as regular text, unless the sender is in my address book
or is a sender I have said I trust.

Does that protect me from the issues being discussed?

With Pegasus Email you are defiantly protected. It doesn't make any
difference if you are using plain text or HTML. By default Pegasus
doesn't retrieve any links to render HTML unless you make an effort
to either turn on the feature or right click and select Show Pictures. It
doesn't make any difference if a user is in the address book or not.
Pegasus doesn't auto execute any files. Which means if someone
sends you a virus in order for it to run you have to make an effort to
select an attachment and run it. Pegasus doesn't send anything
when you delete an email. The only way to confirm delivery or
reading of an email is you have to make an effort to turn on that
feature. Pegasus is the safest email client available. And it's free.

Sorry. I just couldn't sit back and be quiet any longer while you all try
to figure out what is safe and what isn't. There isn't any guess work in
Pegasus. If you want to expose yourself you can with plain and
simple options that you select. No guess work involved.

Be safe stop playing with fire.

PS: I am not affiliated with Pegasus Email in any way except I'm a
happy user.

Actually it was recommended some time back to not use the Preview window at
all. Once it was IN there the "damage was done".

RFC-822 gurus - Do spammers know when we deletetheir mail

You may have only thought you didn't read it. Some email clients will put
the
contents of an email into another window (sometimes called the "preview"
window) if you so much as click on it once to prepare to flag it for
deletion.
Typically I move the window border so close to the next border that I don't
notice this feature.

I've cc'd you this to attach a visual.
