I guess my printer is now almost 6 years old... back when they actually
cared about support. I knew some printers had that problem, but am under the
assumption that most work that way... perhaps that has changed.

My wife used to use my printer (her PC -> Ethernet -> My PC -> Printer)
but it simply wasn't reliable.  And the PCs are on different floors of
the house.  To regain WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) I bought her a
separate printer.

While the quality has gone down in recent years, I still buy HP printers
as the ink generally doesn't dry out if the printer doesn't see much
use.  My past experience with Canon & Epson printers led me to stop
buying them as the ink cartridges would dry out or I'd be subject to
excessive cleaning cycles (which waste ink).

I actually bought entry OfficeJets so we now have 2 color
copier/scanners + 1 FAX machine in the same footprint as the printer.
Print quality is surprisingly good for the price.
