basically, you use vi only when you have to or really enjoy pain....or
just enough to get pico installed :)

Once you get used to vi, you never go back... It's extremely powerful, and it's not difficult to use once you get used to the idea of having two separate "modes".

Pico, ee, aee... these editors are nice for someone who will only use them occasionally. Someone who doesn't want to have to learn about their editor in order to make a few minor changes.

But, when you need to spend 6-7 hours a day for several months editing source code, it's worth taking the time to learn a better editor that can do more. At that point, vi or emacs is a better choice. I prefer vim (vi improved) since it has the syntax highlighting of emacs, but otherwise is like vi. No matter what version of vi you use, you have to develop habits of hitting escape at the right time, and get used to keeping a mental note of whether you're in command or editing mode. That's the hard part is developing those habits. Once you've done that, it's great.
