Chuck,

If the drive is NTFS, I think that it's read-only if you boot from a Linux 
CD.

At least, that's how it is in my dual-boot Kubuntu / WinXP laptop.

To make the NTFS partition read-write, I needed some additional packages, 
IIRC.

That is what I was thinking to but I couldn't figure out how the heck to
change that.

This is a Windows system (i.e. hard drives and jump drive setup under
Windows) booted with the Knoppix CD.
