hi Jon,

I recently purchased a new battery for my laptop - but it never goes beyond
63% or so charged and then stays at that level - as a result it is always
charging.

Is this likely to be harmful to the battery? - and does anyone have any
suggestions as to how to fix this?

I have the same problem with my old laptop (a Sony VAIO if that matters). When I first got the battery it was okay, but after a short period of time (maybe a month?) it started doing this... no matter how long you charge it, it never finishes charging.

The worst part is, since I keep my laptop plugged in when I'm not using it, it constantly uses electricity, increasing my electric bill. So I take the battery our when I don't need it. It stops the electric meter from running, but doesn't really solve the problem.

The battery does appear to be getting worse, but it's happening slowly. Now I can only use the battery for about an hour before the computer shuts down.

Anyway... let me know if you discover a cure :)
