VMWare is pretty darn intrusive ... it installs network adapters and a
few other drivers.  I think it would be difficult to get someone to
allow you to install it on their PC unless they were really familiar
with what it was.

I like the idea of a bootable USB hard drive with your OS & application
of choice.  Linux would be a prime candidate for this, as it is
extraordinarily adaptable to new hardware.
