hi David,
Don't most VPN's set themselves up as the default route? I'm pretty
sure that MS PPTP does ... every time I use it with the VPN server in
our Canadian office, I end up having to use google.ca instead of google.com.
I can't answer that question, I don't know what "most VPNs" do. I can only tell you about the VPN solution that I use. We use OpenVPN at Klement's Sausage, and we can configure exactly how the route is added. I have it set up to only redirect to our LAN if you try to access the private subnets that we use.

I could set it up as the default route, but I guess I'm really only interested in protecting the corporate data :) I don't need the company's bandwidth being wasted on our users downloading microsoft updates, or watching videos on myspace, or downloading MP3s from iTunes or whatever. If you're not on our LAN, then you only need to use company bandwidth for company business, that's my philosophy, anyway.
