XP Pro and (I believe) Vista are licensed per installation, not per
processor, but will support 2 processors max. However, Microsoft makes a
distinction between processors and cores. A processor is something you
plug into a socket, a core is, well, a core. XP would support 2
quad-core processors, for an 8-way XP desktop. Hmmm.... :)

This is also true at the server level. Want to run SQL Server on 4
single core processors? $20K. On 1 quad-core processor? $5K.
