Oops, completely forgot to post my findings.

This was a special PC (tablet with touch-screen and some additional
controls for the disabled user), so the rescue CD didn't work. For some
reason it didn't recognize the touchscreen as a regular mouse.

the driveimage XML program did, however, do the trick: the image is now
safely stored on an external hard drive.

Haven't needed or tried the restore function though.
