And, yes, your second story happens a lot. It's an automated tool out
there to grab on to domain searches and quickly register them so that when
someone then tries to use it you can offer to sell it to them. Make up
something, like ui7da98dgfbbf8867689az88.com and see if it's registered a
few days later with just a dummy "you can buy this domain name..." site.
