The performance depends a lot on your IMAP server, Mike.

I use a local server and I can tell you the performance blows Outlook away (not to mention there is no 2GB limit). Now, I use /Maildir format instead of mailbox, so your mileage may vary. But in my setup, I can do a complex search (From PLUTA with Body containing WDSC) finding 65 matches on over 20,000 messages in about 12 seconds.

The first time I try something like this, the server has to build an index, and I assume you have to update the index for new entries; I try to archive older messages so that new messages don't affect the bigger indices. But in any case, trying to do something like that in Outlook would be measured in minutes, if I was lucky.

Joe

Okay you Thuderbird advocates, how does it perform with a large number of
IMAP items (like from Gmail) after a couple months on more than one account?
I have been using Outlook, but the performance is starting to go downhill. I
am guessing the number of cached items has something to do with that (and
apparently, you can't clear it).
