I'll never understand parents that want to isolate their children
from reality.

Uh, because they *are* children?! I also wouldn't call it isolation. I
would call it "controlled exposure". I agree with Mark's comments.
There's a balance and it takes time for them to grow up. Kids might want
pizza and ice cream for every meal but just because they know how to get
it out of the freezer and heat it up doesn't make it healthy for them.
