FWIW, I'm running Compiz Fusion, and it's not exactly for the
faint-of-heart. Compiz Fusion is the result of the Beryl people getting
together with the Compiz people and merging their projects.
I'm running Compiz Fusion on Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). There are some
stability issues. Some apps do weird things when going to full screen.
Sometimes the window decorations (the part with the title and minimize
+ maximize + close buttons) just disappear. Things are probably at
least a bit better in the newest Ubuntu, 8.04 (Hardy Heron).
That said, it is totally worth it because I can do things like have my
windows go up in flame when I close them :)
Running games on Ubuntu (using WINE, a Windows emulator):
I've spent way too much time the last week playing Half-life 2 this way.
It runs very well, especially considering that by gamer standards, my
machine is starting to get a bit long in the tooth.
