scan and replace in excel is to save-as XML and do the replacing in text.
Once that is done
you can save-as the XML version back over the original.

Thanks Chuck, but we have been there, done that, and it was decided that
this was too much to expect the non-techie group responsible for these
spreadsheets to handle on their own.
