Ditto!
My first and current digital camera is a Canon Powershot G1 which was bought
in 2001 that still functions well except for a couple of missing screws in
the housing.
Considering Moores law, what I spent nine years ago would buy a much better
camera today. The camera and accessories cost around 500.00, and the
still-working 1GB IBM Microdrive cost around $500.00.
The Canon Zoombrowser software also works well - I have used its panoramic
mode to make some cool pics:

+1 for Canon Powershots. We had a G1 and replaced it with an SD800IS when
we wanted something smaller.
We've never had any issues with the zoom control placement.
