Once a year we have a free electronics dump-off here in Palatine. This year I really cleaned out the junk; they didn't believe that I wasn't cleaning out an office. Wheaton has something similar on the first Saturday of every month.

Good grief. Please don't. You'll just release toxic chemicals into the air
if you do.

Use a screwdriver & remove the circuit board. Snap it in two. Take a drill
with a bit made for metal & drill 2 or 3 holes through the platters. After
that it would take Hurculean effort and expense to recover the data.

Then check with your city/county government or waste hauler about safe
electronics recycling.
