Yes, for relaying.

I started experimenting with Blat. I was able to send via relaying
through smtprelay.dilgardfoods.xxx (a server here in the office) which
does TLS. But when I tried going directly to smtp.gmail.com, it
didn't like it.

Notice I xxx'ed out some things, but they were correct in the actual
log. I ass-u-med google was requiring TLS.

I thought by each server going out _directly_ to google, then I
wouldn't be worrying about a mail sender server still being up.

Although I find it hard to believe that Google _requires_ TLS. Certainly
it can't be a requirement for sending email _to_ Google, is it a
requirement for relaying through them?
