Sorry, that should have been an obvious inclusion.

I'm running WinXP Pro service pack 3.

I tried doing something like what you suggest using the XP install disk but it doesn't find the system32 directory. The drive is SATA and I'm wondering if I need to load drivers when I boot from the CD. It does give me a c: prompt though.

Friday the system drive on my home PC ceased working. The system would continually reboot itself. I was able to run CHKDSK on the drive and it has unrecoverable errors. It just passed it's three year warranty so maybe it was time. Anyway, now I'm trying to install the backup drive but it is having it's own issues.

First off, which OS are you using?

You can boot from a Vista or 7 install DVD, press Shift-F10 and load the HKLM hive from C:\windows\system32\config
