In addition to what Peter said, there are times when the SQL statement is too complicated for the Graphical Designer to show. To get to the SQL statement, hit Alt-F11. This will bring up the Macro editor.

Click on View/Immediate. Enter the following in this window:

? activesheet.querytables(1).sql

That will show the SQL statement behind the query.
