I use Acronis to back up my laptop to a Seagate 1.5 TB external USB drive,
which now cost around $129 at Fry's.

My 80% full 200 GB 7200 rpm laptop drive (which has over 7 MILLION files on
it) takes around three hours to back up, so I usually start it before I go
to bed and it completes during the night.

I keep several generations of backups.

Restoring a crashed drive requires putting a new drive in the computer,
connecting the external USB drive, and booting from the Acronis disk and
restoring the most recent copy, and on this PC it takes around 3 hours to
restore it completely.

(Last time done was two weeks ago...)

I haven't lost any significant data due to a computer crash in over 10
years.
