I'm tending towards the Nook due to it's support of ePub but the Kindle
seems to be winning the volume battle. Your thoughts?

I'm still using my Kindle 1 (the original version) that I bought over
two years ago. I don't have any plans to upgrade unless it busts or
until Amazon.com comes out with a color version and it has been around
long enough for the bugs to be worked out.

In addition to both paid and free books from Amazon.com, I also
download free books from feedbooks.com. (There are a lot of other
places with both paid and free books that are Kindle-compatible, but
so far Amazon.com and feedbooks.com are all that I've personally
used.)
