I still find that occasionally useful, and [although you need to be a
contortionist] M$ Word can do that...
While simultaneously holding down the <Ctrl>, <Alt>, and Shift keys, you can
highlight a rectangle of text.
Then, with the rectangle highlighted, press Ctrl-C to copy it
(BTW, you CANNOT right-click on the highlighted rectangle - right-clicking
will de-select the rectangle).
