Have you tried running your scans in Safe Mode? Or, perhaps, from a boot
CD? Basically run the scanner from a machine without letting Windows load
normally (hopefully without letting the ping process get started).

My normal tools of choice when regular AV fails are
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free and
http://www.superantispyware.com/

For preventive measures in addition to AV, I often use
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner to clean up junk. And on a regular basis
use https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ to make sure your browser & plugins
are up to date and http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ to
make sure all of the other apps are current on security patches.

Has anybody run across a virus, bug, malware thing called PING.exe that
seems to take over a box by going up and down in size ?

I have a client pc that just begins to crawl after this "ping.exe" takes
off.

You can end it and it reappears after a few minutes.

I have tried most of the popular anti-virus pc programs to remove it
with little success.

What ever it is got by a Sonicwall and a virus checker on the pc.

Any ideas before I have do a very long reload procedure on this
machine ?

There seems to be some relationship with this bug and a browser.(Firefox)

I can't tell you how much I hate these folks that do this for fun.
