Same thing happened to me. Then my inner grammar cop kicked in and replaced the statement with "the model we had had stolen" and all was right again. But since almost nobody uses pluperfect (or future perfect) these days, I simply ignored the grammar cop. Besides, he was busy rewriting the sentence entirely "that had been stolen... that someone had stolen... " so I just walked away. :)
