A friend just picked up the Samsung 7" Galaxy tablet. Probably the Tab 2
that Dave mentioned as it retails for $249.99. When my friend & I were
looking at Fry's, the Samsung seemed to have good build quality, came with
ICS, and had good hardware specs.

Some of the less expensive tablets, well, you could see why. Less
memory/slower CPUs, less impressive screens, worse cameras, and case designs
that fit the parts but don't really contribute to a positive user
experience. As with the crop of sub-$500 laptops, you can basically tell
they're engineered to meet a price point, not to meet a user experience
goal.

I'd also look at the Asus Transformer, and possible the Sony & Lenovo
tablets.

As to tablet OS, if it's running 2.3/Gingerbread or any other pre-3.x
version of Android, run away. 3.x/Honeycomb was the first release designed
for tablets (and not smartphones). 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich would be the
ideal version as it builds on what Google learned from Honeycomb and
combines tablet & smartphone support.

Price-wise, tablets seem to be a lot like game systems. You don't really
get significant discounts off MSRP. But you can save money when buying as
part of a bundle.

but....that market is changing almost every week, so current reviews are
fairly thin.

The various ups and downs are really hard to determine and when you start
talking about the o/s of the tablet, you are never sure which version of
Android you might be getting.

The Nook seems to lock you in VERY tightly with B&N company.
The Kindle Fire seems to lock you into Amazon, etc, etc.

The support level for these products is **zero** which is what
$200 products get.

Can't seem to find a good place that compares tablets, with the

I found lots that sort and compare on features...
The situation is, we do like the features and price point of the nook
tablet (8GB, $199), but I would rather not be "locked down".
I see some $199 ICS (Android 4.0) tablets, but am not finding any good
reviews.

any ideas?
