Agreed that none are perfect. IMO for personal use you should find a free
product and stick with it as long as it meets your needs. When it no
longer does, dump it & move on. Unlike productivity apps like Office or
Photoshop, most PC utility software can be swapped out with little drama &
no relearning.

Personally I was a long-time Free AVG user but over the past year or so
I've switched to Microsoft's Security Essentials which is the free version
of their Forefront enterprise AV product.

When we're suspicious that something bad might have gotten pas the AV
software I use more free products - malwarebytes and superantispyware - to
supplement.

And as an aside, I'll mention this as it also comes with an AV scanner.
ultimatebootcd.com is a free ISO of free utilities for all kinds of PC
stuff from memory testing to cloning disk partitions to new hard drives.

I've been using avast for years...no problems... and it's free...

Keep in mind that none of them are perfect...

When I signed up for broadband at home, I got Norton Internet
Security for "free". So, being somewhat frugal (okay, cheap), I
installed it. I occasionally, after a re-boot, get error messages
that say I turned off auto-protect. According to my searches, the
"fix" recommended by Norton (Symantec) is to remove NIS and
re-install it. Well, let's just say that this seems like a lot of
work just to fix the problem.

I've been using MS's antivirus with no problems.

This is what we use at work too.
