Getting a little drastic, but ..

1. Back up. Consider the Easy Transfer (
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4503) to snag
specifically your files & app settings if you dont' care about the apps
themselves.
2. Blow everything away & reinstall XP. Basically get as clean an install
as you can.
3. Immediately do the W8 upgrade.
4. Restore data.

Yeah, I'd seen that. The first response is of little help, it's just
boilerplate. The only thing I have left to do is to uninstall the MS
Security software, guess I'll disconnect the network cable to be safe.

One implication is you should check for file system corruption so run a
CHKDSK /F. You might also use CCleaner or some other utility to clean
temp
files & whatnot from the old XP install.

Yep, done it all.

Also, did you check if a BIOS update was available?

Yep, and there isn't an update available. The only thing I'll be
missing is the Safe Start (or whatever it's called).
