Well, I found out why the Brother printer, which I was thinking about, isn't
covered in the IBM Printer chart. Brother said it couldn't be used as an
emulation printer on the System i. Sounds odd to me, but I'll take their
word for it.

I found HP8600 in the Printer chart, though. I assume (please forgive me)
that the settings there cover all models in the 8600 family. I can find
8610, etc., on-line, just not a bland 8600. I'll probably get one this
weekend, and I'll return the old Laserjet 4200 to the company when I go down
to do the quarterly Save 21 on Friday.

If this is for home/SOHO usage, I like the HP OfficeJet 8600 family. You
can get them for $120-150 and they do the print/scan (including
OCR)/copy/fax, have good speed, duplex, etc. Connect via USB, Ethernet, or
WiFi.

The 8000 family's advantage over lower end/cheaper units is that they're
more efficient on ink usage. So they're cheaper to operate.

And that may be the rub, John. This printer is so bloody old; at
least 10 years. But it was a loaner (they had no use for it,
obviously) so my only investment was for toner and fusers

Sounds like a good excuse to go out and buy a decent printer. Heck,
might even get one with a scanner/copier; but, then, I wouldn't have
an excuse to bother my sister at work!

You might also want to make sure the printer has Win7 drivers before
trying the parallel-USB adapter. Some peripheral manufacturers used
the change in driver models that occurred when Vista came out (further
refined by Win7 &
8) as an opportunity to end support for older models (in an attempt to
spur new sales).

Is there a balun/dongle/whatever that can attach a parallel

I have loads of USB ports! I hate "upgrades"!
