Rob,
Both are for producing visual content in web browsers. Shockwave is fading away. Flash is also fading but not as fast. Shockwave files are produced with Adobe Director while Flash files are produced with Adobe Flash. It probably wouldn't hurt to get both but you probably don't need both. Flash would probably do fine on its own.

Subject: [PCTECH] Shockwave Flash vs Shockwave for Director
I was perusing through my Mozilla Firefox add ons and I see two
Shockwave's:
Shockwave Flash 19.0.r0
Shockwave for Director 12.1.7.157
The latter is flagged as critically out of date. I try the update now
highlight and that displays a blocked warning from FF. Says it's blocked
because it's out of date. I'm thinking "then perform the bloody update!"
How do I update Shockwave for Director 12.1.7.157?
I just did the Adobe update. Control panel shows
Adobe Flash Player Settings Manager, Updates tab, says:
ActiveX Version: 14.0.0.125
NPAPI Plug-in Version: 19.0.0.245
PPAPI Plug-In Version: Not installed
