They may be true but it doesn't explain why I'm so much slower with the router than without.

What made the difference for me was the modem. My modem was 5 years old. I bought a new one ($40) and my home speeds at least tripled. Downloads of 1.5Mbps to 4Mbps jumped to 12Mbps and higher. Thats my PC through a wired router to a cable modem.
