Call it a case of mixing metaphors - "daily driver" is directly related to cars, as one that is older, maybe, that you use all the time except for special occasions when the Bentley comes out of the garage.

It took me a while to stretch the metaphor to a more general application of a beater anything that you can bang around with no fear.
