In the recycling bin perhaps ?
Usually the files on external drives fully delete, but maybe not this time.
The quick format should definitely clear the entire thing.
Do you only have 1 drive or rotate them around ?
You're at risk if you erase the backup drive and then one of the PCs gaks in the meantime.
Way back in the early iPod days I almost had that happen when I had backed up all my music to a single external drive that subsequently failed when I was restoring it.
Better to have 2 or more backup drives than 1.
Q: What backup software do you use to image them ?

subject: [PCTECH] External USB drive issue
All,
I have a 5TB external USB drive that I use for quarterly Windows system image backups for a number of desktop PCs.
This quarterly go round I reached the 4th desktop and it failed saying there wasn't enough space on the disk. I always delete the old one I am about to replace so this seemed odd. I looked and there was only 38gb available.
I deleted all the images from the end of June and there's still only 38gb available. It reports this on 3 desktops, including mine.
Any idea what is wrong? Do I need to do a quick format? Is it failing?
I'm currently running a CHKDSK on it which will most likely take all day to complete.
Thanks.
