Buck, I had previously tried creating and using a virtual device - no luck. May try your second suggestion. The story is that there existed a program (creating a 900+ page compile) which is already doing the job on invoice release in an interactive environment. Because we use a separate program to do shipment confirmation, all the invoice release program needs is the information from the shipping (scale) system. I developed the interface between the scale and an AS/400 file to be fed to the invoice release program and just fed the IR program a parm that told it to get shipment info from scale system file and to skip the lines which output the screens which now are not needed (except when we need to do some shipments interactively). Because of the complicated processes in the IR program, I don't look forward to rewriting it for a batch environment.
