It >> looks like IBM had three different thought patterns for creating programs >> from PDM. Not so - there was a very consistent thought pattern used. It was simply "Can we make it work ?". CRTBNDCBL does not support the DFTACTGRP parameter because the compiler does not support the option. The parameter DFTACTGRP is really very badly named - it doesn't mean "Does it run in the default AG ?" - although that is its effect - what it means is "Does this program behave like an OPM program ?". Since simulating this behavior was relatively easy for RPG and CL, they implemented the function. For COBOL on the other hand, it would have been very expensive and very error prone. That is why we elected not to do it. I won't go into the details, but it has to do with the COBOL Run-Unit - something neither RPG or CL have to worry about. >> One thing I have been able to do with SQL that you can not do with >> RPGLE is create Subprocedures that will do file IOs. I agree that we should use SQL more. But not for the reason you state - I have a lot of Subprocedures that do file I/O - in fact I teach people to use them to isolate their I/O functions from the main line logic. I think you have missed something somewhere along the line. >> If my example is not the reason for not having the parm on the command, ..... The main reason is the one previously stated - the SQL folks are just _real_ slow in adding new features to the pre-compiler. They are so busy upgrading the database itself that they never seem to allow enough resource to update the pre-compilers. The list of missing facilities gets longer with each release and there's no relief in site. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This is the RPG/400 Discussion Mailing List!
