             You must remember that a Source file is a PF of type *SRC. 
And hence, any file operation valid for a DB file is valid for a source 
file. 
             Addressing your problem, inorder to update a particular 
member of a source file, first override the source file to the specific 
member and then call your rpg program. Within the RPG program,  define 
the source file in the F spec as you would with a normal PF/LF. Then use 
the read and update opcodes to update the source member. There is no 
distinction between a source file and a data file when it comes to 
database operation within a program.

I have inherited an RPG38 program whose source code is lost (we do not 
have an uncompiler!) but which does the following:

Based on entry parms, it updates a member of a source physical file, 
apparently without calls to any CL programs. The source physical file 
contains exactly one member which is the source specification for the 
FMTDTA command (sort utility). The purpose is to enable dynamic 
selection and sorting of a particular database file.

How can an RPG program do this? I thought they could update only 
database files. Could it be using some API?
