We use a product called DELPHI/400 also known as ACE/400 it provides record level access - doesn't use ODBC. You can setup as400 files with an IDAPI driver so that they are identical to paradox or DBASE or whatever files to your application. It is supposed to work with VB also but I have not tried that. All of our tests show it to be much faster than ODBC and it allows us to easily use commitment control which is important with PC clients. We use RPG/SQL on the 400 for large reports/heavy processing. No matter how fast your network and drivers are they can't compete with native as400 batch processing.
