Are you asking for something like this?

CF update reade
CF endif
I'll add it to our proposed enhancements list.
But then again, you could always do:
CF update:e reade
CF if %error
CF -- handle error
CF endif
or perhaps in a future release:
CF monitor
CF update reade
CF on-error 1221
CF -- handle error
CF endmon
