There is an option when you addpftrg that says allow record buffer updates.
In this case this is exactly what you want to do since you are doing this in
the before update or before insert events.

There are other situations where you could set yourself up for a never
ending loop of triggers but this almost always involves circular references
in the updates. For example trigger in File A writes a record to file B and
trigger in file B writes a record to file A which causes the original
trigger to fire...
