John, >There's probably fewer people that know how to write SPECIAL files than >know how to find/read the documentation and understand how to use >API's Hey, I resemble that remark! I've used SPECIAL files before, but not recently. Prior to getting things like %editc() or the edit APIs, they were pretty good for performing inline editing by mimicking a one-record work file but without the disk I/O. You could EXCPT a list of fields with edit codes or words, then READ it back into character fields. Quite fast, but certainly not as nice as the BIFs and APIs. I also used SPECIAL with SUBR01 back on the 34/36 for writing my own utilities where I needed to read OCL between a // RUN and // CEND... >Now SUBR22 .......... Was that the one where you could test the state of the inquiry latch on the 34/36? I think I only ever used that once. Before Hans mentioned it, it had also occurred to me that a SPECIAL file would be one way of doing the IFS. And it may be a decent option for RPG III programs. But for RPG IV, I'm not convinced it has any real advantage over just creating service program routines.
