     True.  The light at the end of that tunnel might come when employers 
     see the potential in open source.  Not that I'm holding my breath.

into a system like JDE to get it where it is today!"
     
     Compare the man years (person years?) that have gone into Windows (all 
     flavours) to those that have gone into Linux.  The question of project 
     scale seems to have been answered once and for all; the real question 
     is availability of hackers.  In other words, the biggest sticking 
     point is your (a) above.
     
     What this means, realistically, is that there will be an open source 
     ERP system developed (it's kinda inevitable, really), but sadly it 
     probably won't be on an AS/400.  Unless IBM catch on to this, and that 
     right soon, the ideal machine won't be the one used for the ultimate 
     ERP package.
